BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 12. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Gulf countries could be compensated for damages caused by Iranian attacks using funds from frozen Iranian bank accounts. Reuters reported that the Treasury is requesting Gulf states to provide estimates of the costs needed to repair the damage.
TurkicWorld reports that Bessent also mentioned that any tolls paid to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, established by Tehran to oversee traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, would be offset using the seized Iranian funds.
Iran is estimated to have at least $100 billion frozen globally, including in Europe, Japan, China, and Qatar, as a result of US and international sanctions imposed since the 1979 revolution.
