Trump says US reinstating blockade against Iran in Strait of Hormuz

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 13, US President Donald Trump said Washington is “reinstating” a blockade against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and plans to charge ships for safe passage through the strategic waterway.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would be known as “the guardian of the Hormuz Strait” and claimed that Washington would be compensated for providing security in the region.

“As such, and as a matter of fairness, [the US] will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the world,” Trump wrote.

He added that the process of establishing the system would begin immediately.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, with a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow waterway. Any restrictions on maritime movement could have major consequences for international energy markets and global trade.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides facing renewed disputes over navigation, security, and regional influence.
