BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 26. US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Iran’s economic situation and its treatment of protesters, while saying he has set no timetable for the resumption of negotiations with Tehran.
Trump claimed that Iran was facing severe economic difficulties, including high inflation, and said the country’s economy was deteriorating.
“They’ve got massive inflation, their economy is falling apart,” Trump said.
The US president also accused Iranian authorities of treating the population “very badly” and killing large numbers of protesters.
“They are killing many, many protesters,” Trump said.
His comments come as Washington intensifies economic pressure on Tehran through a new sanctions campaign targeting Iran’s financial and commercial links with the international economy.
The Trump administration has also warned countries and companies maintaining certain economic ties with Iran that they could face US sanctions.
Despite the heightened pressure, Trump said there was “no time schedule” for negotiations with Iran to resume, leaving the timing of any renewed diplomatic engagement uncertain.
The remarks suggest Washington intends to maintain economic pressure on Tehran while keeping open the possibility of future negotiations.
