BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 24. Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has held talks in Tehran with Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with discussions focusing on the implementation of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, Ghalibaf told Munir that Washington had violated commitments related to the implementation of the MoU signed with Iran in June through Qatari and Pakistani mediation.
Ghalibaf argued that the alleged US failure to fulfil its commitments had undermined efforts to restore stability in the region and further damaged Tehran’s trust in Washington.
“The US, by breaching its commitments, prevented the establishment of stability in the region and created another reason for distrust,” Ghalibaf was quoted as telling the Pakistani military chief.
Munir, according to the Iranian report, said Pakistan would continue its efforts aimed at restoring regional stability.
The meeting highlights Islamabad’s continuing intermediary role as efforts continue to manage tensions between Washington and Tehran and preserve a potential path towards renewed diplomacy.
Separately, an informed source in Washington told Al Jazeera Arabic that US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Munir last week.
According to the source, Trump asked the Pakistani military chief to use his influence to help restart negotiations with Iran.
The reported contacts suggest Pakistan remains involved in diplomatic efforts between the two sides as disagreements persist over the implementation of previous understandings and the conditions for returning to negotiations.
