BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 26. The United States has imposed sanctions on Palestine Action, designating the UK-based group as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist”, according to the US Treasury Department.
The designation subjects the group to US financial restrictions and represents a significant escalation of measures against the organisation.
Palestine Action describes itself as a direct-action movement seeking to end what it regards as international complicity in Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
The organisation has also been banned in the United Kingdom, where it is based.
The UK’s decision has generated controversy, with several human rights organisations raising concerns about the use of counterterrorism legislation against protest movements.
Amnesty International is among the organisations that have criticised the British ban, arguing that it represents a misuse of counterterrorism powers and could undermine the right to protest.
The US designation adds further international pressure on Palestine Action and could significantly restrict its access to financial networks connected to the United States.
