China calls for free and safe passage through Strait of Hormuz

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 13, China has called for ensuring “free” and “safe” navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the strategic waterway is an international shipping route and that restoring normal passage serves the interests of all countries.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the issue of navigation through the strait should be handled appropriately and in accordance with international interests.

His remarks came after a week of reciprocal attacks between the United States and Iran over disputes related to maritime routes and security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Iran’s ambassador to Beijing said ships passing through the strait would be subject to new transit fees. However, he added that China and other countries considered “friendly” by Tehran would receive special considerations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, with a significant share of global oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow waterway. Any restrictions on navigation could have major consequences for international energy markets and trade.
