BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. Jordan has strongly condemned Israel’s takeover of land belonging to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in the Silwan neighbourhood of occupied East Jerusalem, calling the move “a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law.”
TurkicWorld reports that Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fuad Al-Majali said the kingdom “absolutely rejects all unilateral, illegitimate, and provocative measures aimed at altering the prevailing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its sanctities.” He stressed that “Israel holds no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian sanctities.”
The statement reiterated Jordan’s position that establishing an independent Palestinian state within its national territory is the only way to achieve just and comprehensive peace and ensure regional stability.
Israeli authorities took control of the land on Monday, expelling the Patriarchate’s representative, confiscating equipment, uprooting trees, and fencing off the area. The incident has drawn international criticism for undermining the legal and historical status of religious sites in occupied East Jerusalem.
