Visas issued for Iranian national football team ahead of 2026 World Cup

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 3. Iran’s ambassador to Turkiye, Mohammad-Hassan Habibollahzadeh, confirmed that visas have been issued for the country’s national football team to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins next week. State-run news agency IRNA reported that Mexico had granted visas to all players and staff members travelling with the team.

TurkicWorld reports that last month, the Iranian Football Federation announced that the team’s training base for the tournament had been moved from Arizona in the United States to the Mexican border city of Tijuana, just south of San Diego, citing security concerns and uncertainty stemming from the US-Israeli war against Iran.

Iran will play all three of its group-stage matches in the United States, flying in from its base in Mexico. The tournament is being co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
