Azerbaijani-Uzbek ties rise to strategic level - political analyst

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 25. Friendly and fraternal relations with Turkic-speaking countries, the development of economic ties, and relations of continuity always play a leading role in President Ilham Aliyev's foreign policy, political analyst Azer Garayev told Trend.

Garayev noted that relations between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan have reached a new peak in recent years, which was further strengthened during the state visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Uzbekistan on August 22, 2024.

“Fraternal ties have been established between Uzbekistan and the two regions of Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will be specially celebrated next year.

The important treaty on allied relations between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan was signed during this visit, which was an indicator of the elevation of relations between the two countries to a strategic level.

During the meeting between President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, both leaders spoke of close cooperation between the countries and emphasized its successful development in various spheres. Large-scale projects are being implemented, especially in the spheres of economy, industry, and infrastructure. President Mirziyoyev highly appreciated Azerbaijan's reconstruction works in Karabakh and expressed Uzbekistan's readiness to lend its support to the process. This includes Uzbekistan's offer to participate in construction works in Karabakh.

Garayev noted that relations between the two countries have reached the highest level—the level of alliance. These allied relations will ensure further rapprochement between two brotherly nations and two powerful states, as well as play an important role in regional politics in the future.

The political scientist also mentioned that several important documents were signed during the visit in order to expand cooperation between the two countries in various spheres.

“Among them is the ‘Agreement on Allied Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Uzbekistan’, which has gone into history as one of the most important documents. This agreement will allow Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan to act as allied countries, supporting each other in the international arena.

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will jointly launch important projects such as the construction of hotels, textile clusters, garment factories, the production of construction materials, and others. A joint investment company with a capital of $500 million is operating to implement the projects. Strong ties between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will greatly contribute to the development of both countries in economic, political, and cultural spheres and are expected to deepen in this direction in the coming years.

The close ties between the two brotherly countries, historical ties, and the high level of friendly relations between the heads of state are the key points contributing to the rapid development of Azerbaijan-Uzbekistan relations,” he added.
