BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 2 Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the US-backed framework signed with Israel is designed to establish the roadmap for future negotiations rather than serve as a final peace treaty.
Speaking in an interview with Lebanon's private broadcaster LBCI, Salam said the term "framework agreement" has caused misunderstanding, stressing that the document is intended to guide negotiations toward a lasting settlement.
"We are talking about a guiding framework for negotiations to define their path with the aim of reaching an agreement," Salam said.
He acknowledged that Lebanon did not seek negotiations with Israel but said the country had reached this point after two wars that claimed thousands of lives.
Israel and Lebanon signed the US-sponsored framework on Friday in an effort to launch formal peace negotiations. However, Hezbollah rejected the agreement, saying it does not recognize the deal and will neither disarm nor dissolve.
