Israeli strike in southern Beirut described as a “targeted assassination”

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 28. Israeli forces carried out what the military described as a “precision strike” in the Choueifat neighbourhood of southern Beirut, targeting an apartment inside a residential building. According to reports from the scene, the attack appeared to be a targeted assassination operation.

TurkicWorld reports that the strike caused a loud explosion across Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area widely regarded as a stronghold of Hezbollah. Israeli officials have not yet disclosed the identity of the intended target or confirmed whether the operation successfully eliminated a specific individual.

The incident is considered highly significant because Beirut had remained relatively untouched since the ceasefire arrangement that came into effect in mid-April. This was reportedly only the second Israeli strike on the Lebanese capital since that period began. The previous attack took place on May 6, when Israel stated it had targeted a Hezbollah commander.

Over the past several days, Israeli military operations have intensified across southern Lebanon, with air strikes expanding into multiple regions. Analysts say the latest attack on Beirut signals a widening scope of Israeli operations amid growing regional instability.

Witnesses in Beirut also reported the presence of Israeli reconnaissance drones flying at low altitude over the Lebanese capital following the strike, heightening fears of further attacks.

No official casualty figures have yet been released by Lebanese authorities. Hezbollah has not issued an immediate statement regarding the incident.
