Mine contamination threatens water systems in Azerbaijan's liberated territories

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Over 300 underground water aqueduct systems in the Azerbaijani territories liberated from the Armenian occupation are contaminated with mines and ammunition, said Hafiz Safikhanov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Campaign Against Landmines Public Union , TurkicWorld reports.

He made the statement at the press conference about the project's outcomes, "Strengthening International Support to Azerbaijan in Demining."

The chair emphasized the mine pollution of the Kondelenchay, Tartar, Khachin, Gargar, and Hakari rivers, as well as the destruction and mining of numerous canals.

To note, from August 12 through August 18, a total of 31 anti-tank mines, 121 anti-personnel mines, and 6,954 unexploded ordnances were found and neutralized in the liberated territories, with 1,048.7 hectares of land cleared of mines.

Following the liberation of its lands, Azerbaijan began operations in November 2020 to sweep its lands clean of mines, booby traps, and other weaponry that the illegal Armenian forces had left behind.
