Demining operations uncover Armenian-planted mines along Azerbaijani-Iranian border

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. The 132-kilometer stretch of land in the Jabrayil and Zangilan districts of Azerbaijan was heavily mined during the Armenian occupation, said Hafiz Safikhanov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Campaign Against Landmines Public Union, TurkicWorld reports.

He made the statement at the press conference on the outcomes of the "Strengthening International Support to Azerbaijan in Demining" project, highlighting that the fact was confirmed through information gathered during meetings with mine detection teams.

"On June 17, 2022, four individuals involved in demining operations were injured in a mine explosion in the Khudaferin village of the Jabrayil district, near the Iranian border. The Armenian military had planted anti-tank mines in the Mashanli village of the Jabrayil region, also bordering Iran, and these mines were subsequently discovered and neutralized during the demining process.

Additionally, during discussions with sappers, it was brought to light that the Armenian military had placed both anti-personnel and anti-tank mines in the border villages of Jojug Marjanly, Mehdili, and Amirvarli in the Jabrayil region. These mines were also discovered and neutralized as a result of the ongoing demining operations," Safikhanov added.

To note, following the liberation of its lands, Azerbaijan began operations in November 2020 to sweep its lands clean of mines, booby traps, and other weaponry that the illegal Armenian forces had left behind.
