Gulf air defences tested as regional fighting intensifies

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 14, Air defence systems across the Gulf have been activated again this week as tensions continue to rise between Iran, the United States, and its regional allies.

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan placed their air defence systems on alert after Iran launched another wave of attacks that it said targeted US military installations.

The latest developments followed renewed US strikes on Iran’s southern coastline, including areas around the strategic port cities of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Jask, as well as Qeshm Island.

Gulf countries have invested heavily in advanced air defence systems in recent years, including missile interception technologies designed to counter ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.

However, experts say the effectiveness of these systems depends on factors such as early warning capabilities, intelligence sharing, the scale of attacks, and the ability to respond to simultaneous threats.

The escalation has highlighted the importance of regional air defence networks as Gulf states seek to protect critical infrastructure, military facilities, and energy facilities from potential attacks.
