Former Israeli foreign minister criticises government over Lebanon strategy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 22. Former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has criticised the Israeli government’s handling of the situation in Lebanon, calling its current approach a strategic failure.

TurkicWorld reports that in a post on X, Livni said that the existing arrangement involving a US-Iran-Qatar-Lebanon mechanism to halt IDF operations in Lebanon represents a failure that could have been avoided. She argued that Israel had not properly leveraged its military gains into long-term security outcomes.

Livni said she had previously proposed an alternative framework involving Israel, the United States, and Lebanon to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and advance the disarmament of Hezbollah. She claimed that Iran and Hezbollah were at their weakest at the time and that international support for disarmament was achievable.

She added that relying solely on military force without a clear diplomatic strategy would lead to further failures, saying, “Whoever promises only more military force and a knockout blow without a strategy and a diplomatic plan promises the next failure.” Livni concluded by calling for a change in leadership and strategic approach.
