Former Israeli defence chief warns prolonged conflict risks Israel’s security

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. Former Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon has warned that continuing the conflict in southern Lebanon is putting Israel at risk, criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government.

TurkicWorld reports that in an interview with Israeli Channel 12, Ya’alon said Israel is “paying the price for the hallucinations of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government,” noting that soldiers continue to die because of “private and partisan political interests.”

He argued that negotiations with Lebanon should have begun as early as October 2024 and accused Netanyahu of prolonging the war “to keep his extremist coalition safe.” With Israel approaching elections, Ya’alon warned, “if the status quo continues after that, we will have no state left.”

The former minister’s comments highlight growing domestic criticism of Israel’s military strategy and the political implications of ongoing hostilities, underscoring concerns about the human and strategic costs of extended conflict.
