IEA chief warns Hormuz could be shut again despite US-Iran deal

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 18. International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol has welcomed the US-Iran agreement but warned that the Strait of Hormuz remains a highly vulnerable chokepoint that could be closed again in the future.

TurkicWorld reports that speaking at an event in Istanbul, Birol said the agreement should lead to the reopening of the strategic waterway without conditions, stressing that stability is essential for global energy security.

He noted that several countries are now reassessing their energy policies after the recent crisis highlighted how quickly supply routes can be disrupted. According to him, Iran’s past closure of the strait during the conflict demonstrated that the risk of renewed disruption remains real.

Birol also said the International Energy Agency will engage with multiple governments to develop new strategies, as the crisis has significantly reshaped global energy dynamics.

He emphasized that trust is a key requirement for stable energy markets, warning that uncertainty continues despite the diplomatic breakthrough.

“The vase is broken. Now all actors know that the Strait of Hormuz was closed once and it can be shut down again,” he said, underscoring the fragility of the current situation.

The comments come as the US-Iran agreement reportedly includes provisions on reopening the strait alongside easing of military restrictions, raising hopes of reduced tensions in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
