US imposes fresh sanctions targeting Hamas financing network

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 2. The United States has announced new sanctions targeting individuals and entities accused of providing financial support to Hamas, according to the US Treasury Department.

The measures target Gaza-based Saleem Abdallah Saleem al-Zaq, whom the Treasury Department identified as a deputy battalion commander of the Al Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing. According to the department, al-Zaq oversees a financial network used to transfer funds to Hamas.

The sanctions also target two individuals based in France and two affiliated entities that the US Treasury said provide critical financial support to Hamas.

The US Treasury said the designations uncovered a financing network that operated over several years and moved more than $2 million to Hamas through what it described as deceptive charitable fronts and cryptocurrency channels.

According to the department, the network used different fundraising mechanisms to transfer funds while attempting to avoid detection.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would continue identifying and targeting individuals and organizations that provide financial support to Hamas.

The latest measures form part of the US campaign to disrupt Hamas’s financial networks and restrict access to sources of funding.
