BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 22. European Council President António Costa has welcomed the security agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the United States, describing it as a positive development for transatlantic cooperation and Arctic security. The agreement was signed in New York on September 22 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Costa said the European Union was ready to continue working closely with Greenland, Denmark and its transatlantic partners to promote a peaceful, secure and prosperous Arctic.
He stressed that the agreement was based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. These principles had also been emphasized by Danish and Greenlandic leaders ahead of the signing.
The deal allows for an expanded US military presence in Greenland while maintaining the island’s existing constitutional status within the Kingdom of Denmark. It follows months of tensions over US President Donald Trump’s calls for greater American control over the strategically important Arctic territory.
The agreement also strengthens cooperation on Arctic and North Atlantic security, with Denmark previously stressing that the arrangement would reinforce the broader NATO framework rather than place responsibility for Greenland’s security solely with Washington and Copenhagen.
