BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned a new US threat to impose economic sanctions on the country, describing the proposed measures as “illegal and inhumane.”
In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks coincided with the anniversary of the August 19, 1953 coup that removed Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh from power.
The ministry linked the latest US pressure to what it described as decades of hostility by American policymakers towards the Iranian people.
According to the statement, Washington’s latest move represents a continuation of 73 years of US “animosity and hostility” towards Iran. Tehran also accused the US ruling establishment of pursuing policies it described as inhumane, unlawful and arrogant.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry further argued that new economic sanctions would amount to a continuation of a policy that has already been tested and failed.
Tehran also described the threatened sanctions as evidence of what it considers harmful US policies towards the Iranian population and reiterated its rejection of Washington’s economic pressure campaign.
