BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 14. Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Mikhail Ulyanov, has criticised Washington’s calls for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that US military action against Iran was responsible for undermining navigation through the strategic waterway.
“The logic of Washington is not understandable,” Ulyanov said in a post on X. He argued that the United States is now demanding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz even though, in his view, that freedom was undermined by US aggression against Iran.
Ulyanov further accused Washington of attempting to address the consequences of what he described as a strategic mistake by continuing the war.
“Now, they want to remove the consequences of their strategic mistake through the continuation of war. Something is wrong here,” he wrote.
The comments come amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important maritime route for global energy supplies. Disruptions to navigation through the waterway have raised concerns over international shipping and the stability of energy markets.
Ulyanov’s remarks reflect Moscow’s broader criticism of US policy toward Iran and its approach to maritime security in the region. His statement also highlights the competing narratives surrounding responsibility for the disruption of navigation through the strait.
