France considers Syria as alternative oil route amid Hormuz tensions

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 9,France is exploring the possibility of using Syria as an alternative energy corridor for Gulf oil shipments amid renewed tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said.

Speaking to French broadcaster TF1, Barrot said the crisis in Hormuz highlights the need to diversify energy routes and reduce dependence on a single strategic waterway.

“Among all the efforts we have made since the start of this crisis, there is the idea of preparing alternative routes so that we are not dependent on blockages here or there,” he said.

The French foreign minister said reliable energy supplies require the development of additional transport corridors following renewed US-Iran military tensions in the region.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Syria recently, where he discussed strengthening cooperation with the government of President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
