BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 27. An Alaska judge has ruled that Dan J. Sullivan can remain on the state’s August 18 Republican primary ballot alongside US Senator Dan Sullivan, overturning a previous decision by state election officials.
TurkicWorld reports that the ruling reverses an earlier move by Carol Beecher, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, who had removed the challenger from the ballot on the grounds that he was ineligible to run.
The unelected candidate, a former US Forest Service employee and elementary school teacher, was initially disqualified after Republican Party officials argued that his candidacy could mislead voters due to sharing the same name as the incumbent senator.
The court decision now allows both candidates named Dan Sullivan to appear on the same Republican primary ballot.
