BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 27. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has described the country as being engaged in a “full-scale economic war”, amid intensifying economic pressure from the United States.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, Ghalibaf said Tehran would resist the economic pressure and expressed confidence that Iran would ultimately prevail.
“We will defeat the enemy in this field as well,” Ghalibaf said, referring to the economic confrontation.
His remarks come as Washington moves to significantly tighten economic restrictions against Tehran and increase pressure on Iran’s international financial and commercial relationships.
US officials have warned foreign governments, companies and financial institutions about maintaining certain forms of economic engagement with Iran as part of the latest sanctions campaign.
Iranian officials have increasingly characterised Washington’s economic measures as a form of warfare aimed at weakening the country’s economy and increasing pressure on its government.
Tehran has maintained that it will continue resisting US pressure while seeking to preserve its trade and financial relationships with international partners.
Ghalibaf’s statement signals that Iranian authorities view the economic confrontation with Washington as a major front in the broader dispute between the two countries.
