Russia welcomes Azerbaijan's decision to seek BRICS membership

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Russia welcomes Azerbaijan's decision to seek BRICS membership, said Grigory Karasin, Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, TurkicWorld reports.

"We welcome our friendly Azerbaijan's interest in becoming a full member of BRICS. We will continue to support this effort, although a clear mechanism for admitting new members to BRICS has not yet been established. However, I believe this will be resolved in the coming years," he stated.

Earlier, Aykhan Hajizada, Head of the Press Service Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that Azerbaijan has officially applied for BRICS membership.

Azerbaijan had previously expressed its desire to join this group. BRICS is an informal alliance that includes Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa.
