BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 11. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the construction sites of the “Shams 1” and “Western Horizon” solar power plants in Nakhchivan city on August 11.
The information was released by the Press Service of the President of Azerbaijan.
Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov briefed the President and the First Lady on the ongoing projects.
It was reported that the 25 MW “Shams 1” solar power plant is being built on a 52-hectare renewable energy site. The project is being implemented by CEI Nakhchivan LLC, which has already completed the installation of solar panels with a capacity of 10 MW.
Construction and installation works are planned to be completed in November this year. The station will be commissioned after the completion of grid infrastructure works. Currently, 218 workers are involved in the implementation of the project.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate approximately 57 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, providing energy for nearly 19,000 households. The project is also expected to prevent around 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually and save approximately 12 million cubic metres of natural gas.
The President and the First Lady were also informed about other projects being implemented in Azerbaijan by the AGEC group of companies, which includes CEI Nakhchivan LLC.
They were also briefed on the progress of the 25 MW “Western Horizon” solar power plant.
It was noted that Enerso LLC has completed topographic studies for the project, while geological research is ongoing. Construction is planned to begin by the end of this year.
The project will be implemented on a 50-hectare renewable energy site. After commissioning, the station is expected to produce around 61 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, supplying nearly 21,000 households.
The project is also forecast to prevent approximately 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year and save around 12 million cubic metres of natural gas.
Overall, 688 hectares of land in Nakhchivan have been designated as renewable energy zones for the construction of solar power plants.
The total installed capacity of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan currently stands at 2,070 MW, with 108 MW (5.2%) located in Nakhchivan. After the commissioning of the “Shams 1” and “Western Horizon” plants, this figure will increase to 158 MW.
