BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 8. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the United States Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on August 8.
During the call, the two leaders expressed satisfaction on the anniversary of the Washington Summit. They emphasized that the Washington Peace Summit, the Joint Declaration signed in the presence of President Trump, and the initialling of the agreement on the establishment of interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia had brought the conflict in the region to an end and consolidated peace.
President Ilham Aliyev thanked Donald Trump for hosting the Washington Peace Summit and for his contribution to the peace agenda.
Trump, in turn, highly praised President Aliyev's role in the peace process.
The two leaders noted with satisfaction that peace and stability had been maintained in the region over the past year and that no incidents capable of undermining peace had occurred.
The export of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia, the transportation of transit cargo to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory and the launch of trade relations between the two countries were highlighted as positive developments.
The importance of the TRIPP project for regional connectivity was also discussed. It was noted that work on transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan is nearing completion, while hope was expressed that implementation of the TRIPP project in Armenia would begin soon.
Aliyev and Trump also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda.
The signing of a document on strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the United States was described as a historic development. The sides stressed that Azerbaijan-US relations had reached a qualitatively new level and acquired a strategic character, contributing to peace and stability across the wider region.
President Aliyev also thanked the US president for the invitation to the G20, describing it as a reflection of the positive attitude towards Azerbaijan.
The two leaders expressed confidence that the Azerbaijan-US strategic partnership would continue to develop successfully.
