US Embassy and Lebanese presidency welcome release of Lebanese prisoners by Israel

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 4 The United States Embassy in Lebanon has welcomed Israel’s release of Lebanese prisoners as a “positive step” and called on both sides to maintain progress ahead of the next round of negotiations.

The embassy said the release could help build confidence between the parties and encouraged continued efforts toward further agreements.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with US Ambassador to Lebanon Michael Isaac and members of US congressional committees on foreign affairs and armed forces at Baabda Palace on Friday.

According to a statement from the Lebanese presidency, Aoun thanked the US ambassador for his efforts in securing the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel.

The Lebanese president also stressed the importance of continuing efforts to secure the release of those still detained, in accordance with understandings reached during trilateral talks and within the framework of follow-up discussions on a broader agreement.

The meeting also addressed US support for the Lebanese army and funding allocations currently being discussed in the US Congress.

The developments come amid ongoing efforts to maintain diplomatic channels between Lebanon, Israel and international mediators.
