BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Pope Leo XIV has met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun as the Vatican expressed concern over difficulties surrounding the implementation of the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel reached last June with US mediation.
In a statement issued following the meeting, the Vatican said the Holy See, which had welcomed the signing of the agreement, was deeply concerned about obstacles to its implementation.
The Vatican also reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at implementing the agreement and addressing the continuing tensions between Lebanon and Israel.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Aoun thanked Pope Leo for his efforts in support of Lebanon and its demands for an end to what Beirut describes as Israeli occupation and attacks on Lebanese territory.
The Lebanese president called on the pontiff to continue supporting Beirut’s demands, particularly efforts aimed at ensuring Israel complies with the provisions of the framework agreement.
Aoun also stressed Lebanon’s demand for an Israeli withdrawal from territories that Beirut considers occupied.
The talks highlight the Vatican’s diplomatic engagement regarding Lebanon as Beirut continues to seek international support for implementing the agreement and addressing its disputes with Israel.
