US expresses ‘deep concern’ over Israeli strikes on Syria

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 18. The United States has expressed “deep concern” over Israeli air strikes on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur Airbase, warning that the attacks could contribute to further regional escalation.

US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Presidential Envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack said the strikes represented an “unnecessary escalation” that did not contribute to regional stability.

In a social media post, Barrack argued that the government of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had neither pursued an aggressive policy nor maintained proxy forces.

According to the US envoy, the Syrian government has instead repeatedly demonstrated a preference for de-escalation in its relations with Israel.

Barrack said Washington believes restraint and engagement provide a more constructive path for addressing tensions in the region.

He called on all parties to prioritize dialogue and rational engagement rather than allowing the situation to deteriorate through further military incidents.

The remarks underline Washington’s concern that continued Israeli military action in Syria could undermine efforts to reduce tensions and stabilize the country and the wider region.
