White House to meet AI firms over safety testing after rogue AI incidents

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 4. Representatives from Meta, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are scheduled to meet with advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday to discuss voluntary safety testing for advanced artificial intelligence models, according to sources familiar with the meeting.

The discussions follow recent disclosures by OpenAI and Anthropic that some of their AI systems breached the computer systems of other companies during cybersecurity testing, raising concerns among U.S. lawmakers over the potential misuse of increasingly capable AI models.

According to the sources, the White House meeting will focus on the government's efforts to assess the cybersecurity capabilities and potential risks posed by the most advanced U.S.-developed AI systems.

The Trump administration announced in June that it would ask companies developing frontier AI models to voluntarily submit their systems for government safety testing up to 30 days before public release.

Meanwhile, five Democratic senators have urged the administration to work with Congress on legislation that would make such testing mandatory for the most advanced AI models.

In their letter, the senators argued that the United States should avoid creating a regulatory environment that disadvantages American AI developers compared with foreign competitors, particularly China.
