BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 25. Reporting from Caracas, journalist Noris Soto described scenes of panic and widespread destruction following a powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela during a public holiday.
TurkicWorld reports that She said many residents were at home watching the World Cup when the quake hit, causing sudden and severe shaking that left buildings damaged and residents fleeing into the streets.
Soto recounted experiencing the tremor firsthand, saying her building was “fractured right in the middle” and that shattered glass and structural damage were visible immediately after the quake.
She added that the country was unprepared for such an event, noting that Venezuela has not experienced a major earthquake of this scale since the 1960s, leaving many people unsure how to respond.
Communication networks were also severely disrupted, with phone lines and internet services down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage. Early reports, she said, suggest the situation may be worse than initially understood.
Soto concluded that many people have lost their homes and “basically have lost everything,” while survivors remain in shock and uncertain about the scale of the disaster.
