Azerbaijan expresses condolences to Indonesia over deadly earthquake

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 15. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed condolences to Indonesia following a powerful earthquake that caused deaths and left dozens of people injured.

In a statement published on the ministry’s account on X, Azerbaijan expressed deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake and conveyed condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives.

“We were deeply saddened by the news of the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, which resulted in loss of life and numerous injuries. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died and wish a speedy recovery to those injured. In this difficult period, our thoughts are with the people and government of Indonesia,” the ministry said.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early on Saturday. The epicentre was recorded near the coast of Flores Island at a shallow depth at 5:58am local time, or 1:58am Baku time.

The epicentre was located about 68 kilometres from the city of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.

According to the latest information cited in the report, at least 38 people were killed as a result of the earthquake.

The strong tremor has caused casualties in affected areas, with rescue and assessment efforts continuing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the damage.
