BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 10. UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has expressed concern over recent attacks by the Houthi movement on the al-Makha (Mocha) area in Yemen, calling for an immediate de-escalation to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
In a statement published on X, Grundberg said the latest attacks have occurred amid the most significant escalation of military activity since the UN-brokered truce in 2022, raising fears of a return to a wider conflict in Yemen.
“This escalation must stop, and civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected,” Grundberg said, calling on all sides to exercise “maximum restraint”.
The UN envoy warned that the renewed fighting has placed civilians at serious risk and could further undermine efforts to maintain stability in Yemen.
The army of Yemen’s internationally recognised government said a recent attack on al-Makha killed seven people, including four soldiers and three civilians, while at least 30 others were wounded.
The casualties followed an earlier wave of attacks on the same area on Sunday, which reportedly killed at least 11 people.
