BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 27. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck China’s Tibet region late on Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
GFZ said the earthquake occurred in northern Tibet at a depth of about 10 kilometres.
The epicentre was located hundreds of miles north of areas in Nepal and China that were hit by a devastating flash flood on Wednesday.
The flooding reportedly killed hundreds of people, while more than 1,000 remained missing following the disaster.
The latest earthquake follows another seismic event in Tibet. China’s earthquake monitoring authorities reported a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Nagqu on Wednesday, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
Chinese authorities have also activated a Level-IV emergency response for flooding in Tibet amid concerns that a barrier lake could breach.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources has instructed local authorities to closely monitor the barrier lake and rainfall conditions.
An expert team has also been dispatched to Gyirong County to assess the situation and support local emergency measures.
The combination of seismic activity, flooding and the potential barrier lake breach has increased concerns over natural hazards in the Himalayan region.
