UN says 15 children killed and 62 injured in Lebanon over past week

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 29. Fifteen children have been killed and 62 injured in Lebanon during the past week despite the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

TurkicWorld reports.that speaking at a media briefing in Geneva, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said that a total of 77 children had reportedly been killed or injured over the last seven days, citing figures from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

“Fifteen children killed and 62 injured in seven days. That’s an average of 11 children every 24 hours,” Pires said.

According to UNICEF, the vast majority of the child casualties were caused by air strikes in southern Lebanon.

Pires added that seven children were killed and 30 injured in a single day, highlighting the continued impact of hostilities on civilians despite the ceasefire.

UNICEF stressed that international humanitarian law requires the protection of children at all times during armed conflicts and called for measures to ensure their safety.

The agency warned that continued violence poses a serious threat to children and families across affected areas of Lebanon.
