BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 16. The death toll as a result of earthquakes in Türkiye has surpassed 49,000, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Turkic States,TurkicWorld reports.
"I hope that with the support of friendly and fraternal countries, we will overcome the consequences of the earthquake as soon as possible. The countries of the Turkic world were among the first to respond to Türkiye's call. We will not forget your support," he said.
The powerful earthquake hit southeastern Türkiye on Feb. 6, 2023. The quake occurred at a depth of seven kilometers in the Pazarcik region of Kahramanmaras Province.
The provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, Osmaniye, Malatya, Adiyaman, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana and Kahramanmaras were subjected to severe destruction. The quake’s epicenter was located 26 km away from the city of Gaziantep with a population of about 1.06 million.
