BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 16. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said Israel currently represents the greatest potential threat to Syria’s stability, according to Türkiye’s state-run Anadolu Agency.
Fidan made the remarks while speaking to journalists during a two-day visit to Damascus. He said he held a two-hour meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, during which they discussed what he described as “all issues” concerning Syria and the region.
Fidan said Syria’s overall trajectory had been positive over the past two years, pointing to developments including its removal from sanctions and terrorism lists. However, he accused Israel of taking destabilising actions because it does not want neighbouring countries to become strong and stable.
He said Israel would ultimately have to choose between peaceful coexistence with its neighbours and further international isolation.
Fidan also said technical-level talks between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on the structure of the newly established Mecca Alliance were nearing completion. According to him, there are plans to expand the alliance’s membership.
The Turkish foreign minister further said that attacks against Saudi Arabia from any direction, including by actors based in Iraq, were unacceptable. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s solidarity with Riyadh in the face of threats from Yemen’s Houthi movement.
