BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 17. COP29 will be another landmark event for the global community, said Azerbaijani MP Soltan Mammadov as he addressed the Parliamentary Meeting held as part of COP29, organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Azerbaijani Parliament, TurkicWorld reports.
“The international community has placed its trust in Azerbaijan by choosing our country to host COP29. While Azerbaijan is well-known for its abundant hydrocarbon resources, our nation has consistently shown its commitment to supporting the transition to green energy. This has helped us secure the 32nd position in the World Economic Forum’s Energy Transition Index. Azerbaijan is also a leader in the share of investments in renewable energy relative to GDP,” he said.
He highlighted that all eyes are now on Baku, where over 70,000 delegates from various sectors, including international organizations, civil society, NGOs, media, youth and women’s groups, volunteers, eco-activists, and parliamentarians, have gathered to discuss urgent global issues like climate change and environmental protection.
“Azerbaijan has significant experience in hosting major international events. I am confident that COP29 will be another important milestone for the global community,” Mammadov stressed.
He also reminded that on May 16 in Geneva, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to organize the parliamentary conference as part of COP29.
“We have prepared a draft of the final document for the COP29 parliamentary session, drawing from the results of previous conferences such as COP27 and COP28, and discussions held during the 148th IPU Assembly. After the initial draft was completed, we received valuable feedback and suggestions from countries including the UK, Russia, China, Romania, Austria, Saudi Arabia, and Japan. In June, the draft was revisited and further refined with new ideas at the preparatory meeting for COP29. The productive discussions continued at the 149th IPU session, and today I am pleased to present the final document, which reflects our collective efforts,” the MP concluded.
