COP29 parliamentary meeting attendants invited to Nevsky International Ecological Congress

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 16. Participants of the Parliamentary meeting within the framework of COP29 have been invited to the Nevsky International Ecological Congress, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Andrey Yatskin said, TurkicWorld reports.

He made the remark during the session themed "Making climate commitments a reality: parliaments' role in raising mitigation ambition and implementing Nationally Determined Contributions" at the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Azerbaijani Parliament today.

"We are organizing an important international forum - the Nevsky International Environmental Congress, which will take place in St. Petersburg in May 2025. It will be a significant expert platform for discussing climate issues, environmental protection, and other relevant topics. I invite all participants of today's discussion, delegates, experts, and the scientific community to take part in this event," the official explained.

Yatskin reminded that this year Russia is chairing BRICS, and within the framework of the union, issues of climate change, environmental protection, and energy transition have dominated discussions among all delegations. As a result of the BRICS events, the Kazan Declaration was adopted, which underscores the need for action on climate change parameters.

The Parliamentary Meeting is being held in Baku within COP29 under the joint organization of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Azerbaijani Parliament.

Sessions at the meeting are discussing the real impacts of climate change, the parliaments' role in making climate commitments a reality and raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions, unpacking the global climate finance architecture and mobilizing resources and streamlining access to climate finance, enhancing resilience in the face of climate change and scaling up adaptation and strengthening local empowerment.

The event is attended by IPU President Tulia Akson, Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, as well as IPU Vice President from Azerbaijan, MP Sevil Mikayilova.
