BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 16. The session "Making climate commitments a reality: parliaments' role in raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions" on the margins of the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Azerbaijani Parliament, has kicked off in Baku, TurkicWorld reports.
According to the information, this session will focus on how to ensure that mitigation commitments made under the Paris Agreement are effectively translated into real national action.
Special attention will be paid to the role of parliaments in the development and implementation of revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are scheduled to be submitted in 2025.
The session will showcase best practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, at the national level and highlight the key role of parliaments in these initiatives.
Baku hosts the Parliamentary Meeting of the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Azerbaijani Parliament.
The following sessions are held during the meeting: "Setting the scene: understanding the real impact of climate change ", "Making climate commitments a reality: parliaments' role in raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions", "Unpacking the global climate finance architecture: mobilizing resources and streamlining access to climate finance," and "Enhancing resilience in the face of climate change: scaling up adaptation and strengthening local empowerment".
The event is attended by IPU President Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the Parliament (Milli Majlis) of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, as well as IPU Vice President from Azerbaijan, MP Sevil Mikayilova.
