BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 16. The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, has confirmed the killing of a senior commander in an Israeli air strike, describing the incident as a “cowardly assassination”.
In a statement, the group said Nail Atiyah Muhammad Abu Obeid, commander of its Rafah Brigade, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Tuesday evening.
According to the statement, Obeid joined the Qassam Brigades in 1993 and took part in what the group described as numerous significant operations over the following years.
The group said his death came amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza and described him as having been killed alongside members of his community in what it called a struggle against Israeli occupation.
The Israeli military has not been cited as immediately providing further details on the strike.
