Iran unveils major railroad upgrade to boost international trade

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 21. Iran should have a total of 9,100 kilometers of railroads to improve the North-South and East-West international corridors passing through the territory of the country, Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Kheirollah Khademi told reporters, TurkicWorld reports.

According to Khademi, 5,100 kilometers of railroads of the specified length have been put into operation on the territory of Iran to date.

The deputy minister noted that construction work is underway on 2,800 kilometers of railway lines. Meanwhile, the construction of 1,200 kilometers of railway lines has not yet started.

Khademi stressed that 72 percent of the construction work on the Chabahar-Zaheedan railway line has been completed and it can be put into operation as early as next year (March 20, 2025) with the provision of 200 trillion rials (about $456 million has been allocated).

To note, the current length of railway lines in Iran is 14,984 kilometers. A total of 993 locomotives, 29,950 freight cars, and 2,178 passenger cars are operating on Iran's railroad lines.
