BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 24. Russia will assist Kyrgyzstan in the rehabilitation of areas affected by uranium mining and ore processing, TurkicWorld reports.
President Sadyr Zhaparov signed the law ratifying the corresponding agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and the Government of Russia. The agreement was originally signed on March 26, 2024, during the ATOMEXPO-2024 forum in Sochi. The Kyrgyz Parliament approved the law on June 26, 2024.
The agreement aims to ensure the safety of residents living near former uranium mining and ore processing sites in Kyrgyzstan. It also focuses on measures to reduce the risk of emergencies at these sites.
It was previously reported that Russia will allocate 2.141 billion rubles ($24.369 million) to Kyrgyzstan for the rehabilitation of five former uranium mining sites.
To note, Zhaparov signed a law authorizing the exploration and development of uranium and thorium deposits in the territory of the country in June this year. Kyrgyzstan had a moratorium on uranium development since 2019.
