BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12. Construction of a new power unit has started at the Ust-Kamenogorsk combined heat and power plant (CHP), which will increase the station’s capacity by 130 Gcal/h of thermal energy and 100 MW of electricity.
This was reflected in the statement of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.
The start of construction was marked by a capsule-laying ceremony attended by Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Yerlan Akkkenzhenov, East Kazakhstan Region Governor Nurymbet Saktaganov, representatives of financial institutions and Kazakhstan Communal Systems Group. The Ust-Kamenogorsk CHP plant currently supplies around 85 percent of the city’s centralized heating demand. The expansion project is being implemented amid growing demand for heat and electricity driven by the development of new residential areas, social facilities and industrial production.
Upon completion, the new power unit will increase the plant’s thermal capacity by 130 Gcal/h and electrical capacity by 100 MW. The project is scheduled for completion in 2030. The additional capacity is expected to reduce the existing heating deficit and create a reserve for the further development of Ust-Kamenogorsk. One of the key preparatory stages was the signing of an investment agreement between Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and the Ust-Kamenogorsk CHP plant.
"The new power unit will provide heat and electricity to the city’s residents. This will create the necessary capacity reserve for the further development of Ust-Kamenogorsk. The project will also create new jobs. Specialists will be able to work with modern equipment and continuously improve their skills. The energy sector needs new capacities and qualified professionals who can operate them," Akkkenzhenov said.
The project includes the use of modern technological solutions and emission treatment systems designed to improve the efficiency of heat and power generation and reduce environmental impact. The project is being implemented by Ust-Kamenogorsk CHP LLP, part of Kazakhstan Communal Systems Group, with the participation of the Eurasian Development Bank and Halyk Bank. The new facilities are expected to provide heat supply to around 300 residential buildings and social facilities and create approximately 50 new jobs.
