US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Saudi Arabia has the right to defend itself against attacks by the Houthis, while reaffirming Washington’s security commitments to the kingdom.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Rubio said Saudi Arabia had come under Houthi attacks and was entitled to take measures to protect itself.
“Obviously the Saudis have come under Houthi attack … and they have a right to defend themselves,” Rubio said.
He added that neither Saudi Arabia nor Yemen’s internationally recognised government supports Houthi control of the territory in question.
Rubio also stressed that the United States has a binding security agreement with Saudi Arabia and intends to honour its commitments under the agreement.
The comments come amid continued regional tensions and renewed concerns over attacks involving the Houthis and their impact on Saudi security and regional stability.
