BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said an Israeli strike in Khan Younis killed Muhammad Abu Alwan, whom they identified as the head of Hamas’s finance department.
The reported strike comes despite a ceasefire that has been in place since October 2025. The ceasefire framework calls for an end to military operations.
In a joint statement posted on the Israeli prime minister’s account on X, Netanyahu and Katz praised the Israeli military and domestic intelligence agency for what they described as a “precise operation”.
Earlier, the Nasser Medical Complex reported that at least two people had been killed in an Israeli air strike targeting a vehicle in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis. It remained unclear whether that strike was the same operation referred to by Netanyahu and Katz.
Separately, a Palestinian was injured by Israeli gunfire north of Khan Younis.
Elsewhere in Gaza, one person was reportedly killed in a drone attack on a camp for displaced people northeast of Gaza City. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital also reported that a woman was killed after being shot by Israeli forces in the Bureij refugee camp.
The statement by Netanyahu and Katz did not address those reports.
