BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 18. Jordan’s King Abdullah II has called for urgent international efforts to restore stability in the region and prevent the current conflict from escalating further.
Speaking during joint press remarks with Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague on Friday, King Abdullah stressed the importance of dialogue, respect for international law and diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability, according to a statement from Jordan’s Royal Court.
The King said Jordan would continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard its security, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
Turning to bilateral relations, King Abdullah said ties between Jordan and the Czech Republic have developed significantly since they were established six decades ago, evolving into what he described as a strong and lasting partnership based on mutual trust.
He expressed Jordan’s interest in expanding economic and trade cooperation, encouraging investment and business partnerships and creating new opportunities for the private sectors of both countries. He also highlighted prospects for closer cooperation in defence and security.
King Abdullah said Jordan is ready to strengthen coordination, training and exchanges of expertise with the Czech Republic in key sectors.
Addressing developments in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza, the King reiterated Jordan’s opposition to Israeli settlement expansion, settler violence, forced displacement and attempts to establish new realities on the ground, saying such developments pose a threat to regional security.
He reaffirmed Jordan’s rejection of any attempt to displace Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank and called on the international community to prevent attempts to change the historical and legal status quo at Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
King Abdullah also welcomed the Czech Republic’s support for a two-state solution, which Jordan regards as the path towards a just and comprehensive peace. He said Amman would continue working with international partners, including Prague and the European Union, to strengthen regional security, stability and prosperity.
President Pavel, for his part, welcomed the visit by King Abdullah and Queen Rania, saying it provided an opportunity to build on discussions held during his visit to Amman in 2024.
Pavel described Jordan as one of the Czech Republic’s closest and most reliable partners in the Middle East and praised the Kingdom’s long-term efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
The Czech president also highlighted cooperation between the two countries in providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, as well as their collaboration since 2013 under the MEDEVAC medical programme.
Pavel expressed Prague’s interest in expanding cooperation with Jordan in defence, trade, energy, healthcare and water resource management.
Before the press remarks, King Abdullah and President Pavel held bilateral talks attended by Queen Rania and Czech First Lady Eva Pavlová. Expanded discussions subsequently focused on bilateral cooperation and major regional developments.
