BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 17. An estimated 125,000 people have been displaced by fighting along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
The UN agency warned that the number could rise as large parts of the population in southwestern Yemen struggle to access food and essential services while moving towards Aden, al-Maafer and other areas considered safer.
The WFP said it has already provided food assistance to 45,000 people affected by the fighting.
“WFP has already provided food assistance to 45,000 people and is preparing to assist an additional 1.5 million people if the conflict intensifies,” the agency said.
Humanitarian operations have also been affected by the fighting. According to the WFP, its premises in Mocha were breached during the clashes, while at least 49 food distribution points have become inaccessible.
The disruption raises concerns about humanitarian access at a time when displacement and food needs are increasing in areas affected by the fighting.
The Iran-backed Houthis have captured territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including Mocha, amid their latest advance.
Yemeni government forces and their allies are conducting military operations aimed at halting and reversing the Houthi advance along the coast.
The WFP’s warning highlights the growing humanitarian consequences of the fighting, with the agency preparing to significantly expand food assistance if the conflict intensifies and causes further displacement.
