German chancellor condemns Ben-Gvir’s reported Gaza remarks as ‘inhumane’

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 19. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has condemned remarks attributed to Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir about Palestinians in Gaza, with a German government spokesperson describing the comments as “inhumane”.

Israeli media earlier reported that Ben-Gvir said during a podcast interview that between 30 and 40 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip should be killed every night.

The German government strongly criticised the reported remarks, with the spokesperson conveying Chancellor Merz’s condemnation of the comments.

The statement comes amid continuing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the conduct of the conflict.

Berlin also addressed developments in the occupied West Bank, reiterating its opposition to further Israeli annexation of Palestinian territory.

The German government spokesperson said there should be no additional Israeli annexation in the occupied West Bank.

The remarks highlight Germany’s criticism of both Ben-Gvir’s reported comments on Gaza and moves that could further alter the status of the occupied West Bank.
